The WAC is back?

No, but they have one last shot to bust the BCS!

In my SEC conference breakdown I pegged Louisiana Tech as my BCS buster this season.  After their impressive performance against TCU in the Poinsettia Bowl and the return of 14 starters, I thought the opening game in Shreveport against SEC-newcomer, Texas A&M, setup well for an undefeated season.  It didn't hurt to have an explosive Houston team (fresh off almost busting the BCS in 2011) and a UVA team celebrating a 2012 Chick-Fil-A berth on the schedule to add a little more legitimacy.  To recap the season, Houston looks awful, UVA has completely melted down, and the A&M game has been moved to this week due to mother nature throwing a temper tantrum, but La. Tech is rising!  That's right, La. Tech is now #23 and #24 in the AP and Coaches polls, respectively.

Now with a showdown with A&M this coming weekend, La. Tech has a chance to stake a claim as this year's BCS Buster.  A win against an SEC opponent, one that has looked pretty damn impressive under first year starter Manziel, would thrust them into the Top 20.  Given the history of how voters tend to favor undefeated teams and wins against members of the ACC, Big Ten, and SEC, if La. Tech wins out would surely put La. Tech in the Top 15.

With the struggles of the ACC, Big Ten, and always dependable collapse of the Big East, if La. Tech is ranked in the Top 16 and ahead one of the the BCS conference champions they will be guaranteed a spot in the BCS.  It isn't out of the realm of possibility with an undefeated resume like they would have, they could end up in the Top 12 with a spot in the BCS despite BCS conference champion rankings.

I think this will be a tough game midway through the season against this rising A&M team.  I thought it would be easier for the squad the Bulldogs had returning to take advantage of first year starter, Johnny Manziel, but now this will be a straight shootout.  Don't be surprised to see Big 12-esque scores (see WVU-Baylor).  I'm now more confident A&M can force more stops than the Bulldogs defense, but that's why the game is played.  I would have said the same thing about my Mountaineers, but look how that Texas game turned out!

For now the WAC is still alive and how great would it be for the conference that is no more than to bust the BCS one more time?
