So, the ACC is ranked last among the AQ conferences in the CBS and ESPN power polls, but seriously, why way this headline worthy earlier this week? Are people surprised? Have they not watched football the last five years? To be fair to the ACC, Sagarin has them at #5...
The ACC has continued to ride the reputations of Florida State, Virginia Tech, and Clemson without producing on the field. Anyone name the ACC's biggest wins this season? Still thinking? Kinda sad, right? Let me help, it was Clemson over Auburn...barely. Not sure if anyone has seen Auburn this year, but they're awwwwful. Maryland did beat Temple, and Virginia escaped against Penn State, but if you really wanted to argue those are signature wins then you're making my point for me.
This year against AQ teams the ACC is 5-10 and went 8-13 in 2011, but it's not even the poor record against other AQ teams, it's the poor performance of the top teams in the league, namely Clemson, FSU, and VT. There hasn't been a legit national championship contender since FSU won it all in 1999. Every other contender has fallen to teams they simply shouldn't, or lose in prime time games against fellow AQ teams. If you think this is all b.s., just look at their pathetic 2-13 BCS bowl record. Their overall bowl record isn't much better at 24-34 since the 2005 season. That record includes only one bowl season with a winning record.
But enough stats and ACC bashing. The pundits woke up and finally realize the ACC isn't good enough to compete for a national title. They can't even compete against their fellow AQ members. The ACC will continue to generate attention through raiding the Big East for their teams and kissing Notre Dame's ass in hopes they join, but everyone knows when it comes to gameday the ACC is a step behind.
