Here's to hoping we don't see anyone in Tallahassee die today. Seriously, playing Ok St and FSU in back-to-back weeks is murder. Wonder if we'd see any NCAA probes into that matter (I see you North Carolina)? How about we stop these stupid FCS games? No offense to the FCS teams. They can play ball and compete occasionally and even grab some upsets. It's great for their budgets and their fans, but boring for college football. How about Oklahoma State go play USC, and FSU take on Arkansas? Hopefully the playoff system sees an end to a lot of these games.
Week 2 should be just as vanilla as week 1, but we have a few interesting story lines to follow:
1) How will the SEC newcomers fare in their debut? A&M and Missouri were arrogant enough to join the SEC and the SEC was smart enough to take their markets. At least the SEC was nice enough to give them their first conference games at home, but that probably won't help much. This is "Big Boy" football. Both ate slight underdogs, but have a shot at a win after watching Georgia and Florida struggle in week 1.
2) College Jeopardy? The games featuring Duke against Stanford, and Vanderbilt versus Northwestern maybe better suited for the classroom than the football field. I kid, I kid. All of these teams have improved over the last three years and both games should be competitive. Can Northwestern improve after their confidence building, last second win? Will this be the win that sets them on a course to snap tr longest bowl losing streak? Duke looked pretty good last week and Stanford downright awful. Can Duke steal one against a rebuilding Cardinal team?
3) Pac-12 / Big Ten challenge. Unofficial title, but still the debate about who is better continues with 3 games. Illinois, Nebraska, and Wisconsin all travel to the west coast . All three are favored to win, but improved UCLA and Arizona State teams look to followup with their impressive week 1 performances.
4) Which hit seat gets hotter. A loss to A&M will cause a stir in Gainesville, Randy Edsall may just need to head back to Connecticut from Philly, if BC loses to FCS member Maine then Frank may be fired Monday morning. Let's see how these teams do in week 2.
5) Finally, is Taylor Martinez legit as a passer? He killed it last week with his arm, but he'll be heading to L.A. Against a confident Bruins team. For the sake of my spread picks, I sure hope so.
That's all I've got for a pretty bland week in college football, but as always, you never know what will happen. Enjoy!
